Healthy Gums for a Healthy Mouth

Arboretum

Your gums are the foundation of your teeth; they hold them in place, support the roots and even protect the underlying bone. That’s why most dental professionals recommend flossing at least once a day—because brushing alone doesn’t cover all of the surfaces in your mouth where bacteria thrive! If you’re not flossing, you could be neglecting up to 35% of your mouth.

The American Academy of Periodontology estimates that roughly half of U.S. adults have some form of gum disease. The early stage, known as gingivitis, is characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed every time you floss. Gingivitis is completely reversible with non-invasive treatments and home care. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can eventually progress to periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease. Periodontitis has been linked to an increased risk of numerous serious medical conditions, including heart attack, stroke and uncontrolled diabetes.

In the past, the most effective treatment for gum disease was oral surgery. While surgery is sometimes still the best option, Dr. Truong can treat many cases with local antibiotics and deep cleanings if they’re caught early enough.
